When it comes to enriching your workforce by making your employees feel wanted in the company, employee reviews are one way to go. Employee reviews are very informative for both the employee and the company. During this process, the employee’s efficiency and productivity are examined and discussed. The employee can bounce off their feedback of the company and its operations.

When conducting an employee review, you must aim to create a sense of fairness and impartiality. It is here that many individuals face problems in making the balance between fairness and being critical. Our Human Resource specialists provide a few tips on overcoming these hurdles and conducting a productive employee review.

To be conducted more than once per year.

Employee reviews can be a hassle, we get it, but carrying out assessments more than once a year will go a long way. Offer feedback between the official scheduling and ask questions to show you care. Your attitude going into the reviews will reflect on your employee. Going in with a positive attitude will make them feel at ease. Be knowledgeable and praise outstanding performance or effort. Your team’s synergy and productivity will increase.

Be clear and concise.

From the very start, make everything clear. Set out guidelines on productivity quotas, bonuses and personal behaviour and share it with your employees. It limits the chances of being accused of changing the regulations when someone is upset from a bad review.

Point out the bad performances.

Not informing an individual of poor behaviour or performance gives the message you are encouraging it. It will also create obstacles for you when you decide to correct such instances as you will be accused of favouritism. Letting people know you are aware of their failure will encourage them not to repeat the mistake. It’s also crucial to point out such failures at that very moment and not wait for months.

Set the goalposts.

Set defined performance and behaviour goals, and it will give individuals something to strive towards. As humans, we operate as goal-oriented machines, and without such set-out goals, we feel we have no purpose.

Be aware of what type of review is required and provide advice.

An employee review is more than a performance evaluation. It addresses teamwork, availability, eagerness to learn and more. The review type depends on your company’s policies and criteria; however, aim for handling performance and general aspects in the review. Give valuable advice, whether it was a positive or negative review. The advice can include tips, further training, or reading material for them to use.
