While companies should show appreciation towards their employees every day, it’s always nice to treat them extra special on Valentine’s Day. At GCS Malta, we decided to spread love throughout the office and show our #GCSeers how much we value them!
The Strange History of Valentine’s Day
Everyone in a relationship forks money on romantic dinners, surprise gifts, soft toys, and roses every year. However, have you ever questioned why we celebrate Valentine’s Day?
Funnily enough, while the day celebrates love, it has some dark origins. Here’s a timeline of how Valentine’s Day became as we know it today:
- An early religious beginning – during Late Antiquity, the name Valentine was very common, leading to at least 12 to 14 known Valentines at the time. However, the Catholic Church recognises three different saints named Valentinus/Valentine, and one of them died as a martyr on February 14th, 269.
- Link to romance – the first known link to romance with Saint Valentine’s came from the medieval poet Geoffrey Chaucer. In his poem Parlement of Foules, he refers to St. Valentine’s Day as a special day for lovers: For this was sent on Saint Valentine’s Day / When every fowl came there to choose his mate.
- Valentine’s day as we know it – early as the 15th century, people started using the word valentine to address their lover in songs and poems. Next came the Valentine’s Day Cards published in the 18th century; the rest was history.
Valentine’s Day at GCS Malta
Although Valentine’s celebrates romance, many companies consider this the perfect opportunity to treat their employees.
