International Women’s Day arrives once every year on the 8th of March. It’s a time to celebrate women’s achievements, demand equality and fight for fundamental rights and freedoms.

What is International Women’s Day?

Every year on 8 March, International Women’s Day is celebrated to honour women’s accomplishments and advocate for positive change in the lives of women and girls. Today, people worldwide unite to demand gender equality and speak out against the injustices and inequalities that limit women’s rights and freedoms. International Women’s Day allows individuals and groups to come together to work towards a more equitable future.

What happens on International Women’s Day?

On International Women’s Day, people worldwide participate in protests, talks, workshops, films, and music events to demand equal rights for women. Many wear purple to honour the women who campaigned for the right to vote. To show appreciation for the women in their lives, children and men in some countries give gifts, flowers, or cards to mothers, partners, sisters, and other influential women. Find an event near you or join one online to celebrate International Women’s Day.
