In the past, the work environment was characterized by rigidity, uncomfortable clothes, micro-management, and no time to go to the bathroom. Thankfully, we have been moving farther away from such a model, and we have been moving slowly to a more holistic view of wellbeing at work.

It is essential to mention that for years, the wellbeing of a country was measured by economic standards; the more money the country has, the happier people are. But we all know that while money might give you a more comfortable life, it surely doesn’t necessarily bring about happiness.

Instead, peace of mind, mental stability, fruitful relationships, and leisure time is what brings us happiness. It was Martin Seligman who first brought forth this idea. The PERMA Model is a framework that bases wellbeing on five main pillars:

  • Positive Emotions
  • Engagement
  • Relationships
  • Meaning
  • Accomplishment

We at GCS Malta are here to explain what the PERMA Model is and what you, as an employer, can do to implement it at your workplace.

Positive Emotions

The PERMA model theory argues that positive emotions affect one’s quality of life and one’s productivity levels and success. According to studies, people who experience positive emotions have better problem-solving skills. Therefore, employers should ensure that help and support are available to employees whenever they might need it. Stress relief activities such as yoga and meditation could be incorporated during work hours. In addition, employers must ensure that management is equipped with knowledge of dealing with specific issues such as mental health. First aid for mental ill health should be provided to every employee. On a less grand scale, simply dropping a chocolate treat accompanied by a thank you note to an employee can elicit very positive emotions in that person.

Engagement

Engagement in one’s work is essential as it benefits a person’s intelligence, skills, and emotions. Not everyone gets engaged in the same thing; some get absorbed in painting, while others get interested in singing. Employers need to allow employees to engage in items that are not related to their work. Short breaks during the day are essential. When someone participates in something other than work, they improve their performance as it acts as a “reset” button, consequently improving their work performance.

Relationships

Human beings are social animals. They require connection and to feel they are a part of a group. It is an innate need to want interaction and attention. Our days are mostly spent at work, and having positive relationships is crucial. Employers should make sure they organize various team-building activities for their employees.

Meaning

Humans value meaning. We are not satisfied only with shallow and materialistic things. We feel the need to do something that matters. Employers should cater to this human need by ensuring that they are not simply focusing on the company’s productivity but also on the good they can do in society. For example, employees would find meaning in working for a company that helps and donates money to organizations, charities etc. So, go ahead! Make that donation to a local NGO, your employees and people in need will be grateful.

Accomplishment

Let’s admit it, we all like to feel appreciated. If we think we did something we deserve praise for, we try our best to gain that praise. If we don’t feel valued, we would feel demotivated and pretty much unwilling to put in more effort.

In this regard, employers should ensure that employees are given the praise and the recognition they deserve. It is not something that should be reserved for only that one Award night. Instead, it should be a consistent thing. After all, humans thrive better with constant reinforcement rather than just one-time appreciation.
